Louisville, Ky. (February 28, 2008) – McDonald's® Restaurants of Kentuckiana marked February's Black History Month by selecting 10 area students as Black History Makers of Tomorrow and awarding each a $1,000 scholarship.

The 2008 McDonald's Black History Makers of Tomorrow are:

  • Lacie Adwell (Barren County High School)
  • Jasmin Foster (Central High School)
  • Danielle Gohl (Jeffersonville High School)
  • McKayla Heller (Madison Consolidated High School)
  • Jordan Klunk (Shawnee High School)
  • Julio Labra (Charlestown High School)
  • Ricky Mason (Butler High School)

  • Kristen Payne-Stikes (Central High School)

The McDonald's Black History Makers of Tomorrow program recognizes high school juniors and seniors, regardless of ethnicity, who demonstrate exceptional work in their classrooms and communities. Recipients were selected based on academic achievement, character, community service, and commitment to promoting diversity. Each applicant submitted an essay based on the theme: "Inspiration Makes Me…Who or What Inspires You."

"We are quite excited about our program and the accomplishments of our winners," said local McDonald's Owner/Operator Frank Ward. "The Black History Makers program is one of our premiere educational outreach programs. It provides an opportunity for all students, regardless of their cultural background, to come together as one and celebrate the accomplishments of those individuals who have shaped history."

Each of the ten students' $1,000 college scholarships are funded by McDonald's® Restaurants of Kentuckiana. The Black History Makers of Tomorrow were recognized at a ceremony on Wednesday at the Mayor's Gallery in Louisville Metro Hall, which included parents, school administrators, Louisville Mayor Abramson, Chief White of Louisville Metro Police, Angie Fenton of the Louisville Courier-Journal and McDonald's owner/operators and executives.
